Abby Award

The American Booksellers Book of the year (ABBY) Award was established in 1991 to honor the "hidden treasures" that ABA bookstore members most enjoyed recommending to their customers during the previous year. The children's award was added in 1993.

The Book Sense Book of the Year Award -- formerly known as the "ABBY Award" -- was inaugurated on June 2 at BookExpo America 2000. Winners are chosen by independent booksellers across the country who vote for the titles they most enjoyed handselling to their customers in the previous year.

Named after Booker McConnell Ltd this prestigious literature award was initiated in 1969. It is administered by the National Book League in the United Kingdom. It is the premier British award for fiction written in English by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Mary Hemingway founded the award through the Hemingway Foundation in 1976. In 1987, the Hemingway Foundation and Society merged and has been administering the award ever since. Today it is America’s best-known prize for a distinguished first book of fiction.
The L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award honors a book about New England or by a New England author. It honors long-time Boston Globe editor Laurence L. Winship, and is a joint endeavor of PEN New England and the Globe.
Since 1950, the Awards are given to recognize achievements in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature. It's goal was to enhance the public's awareness of exceptional books written by fellow Americans, and to increase the popularity of reading in general.
The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Young Reader's Choice Award is presented by the Pacific Northwest Library Association. The late Harry Hartman, a Seattle bookseller established the award in 1940. The nominations are made by teachers, librarians, students  and others and limited to books published within the 3 years previous. This is the oldest children's choice literature award in the USA and Canada.
